We are excited to partner with ChildSafe now through May 2020.
What is Childsafe?
As the only Children’s Advocacy Center in Bexar County, ChildSafe’s mission is to restore dignity, hope, and trust to children traumatized by abuse and neglect. ChildSafe, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Children’s Advocacy Center, was created in 1992 specifically to combat child sexual abuse in our community. In July 2012, the organization expanded its mission to serve children who have not only been sexually abused but also children who have been physically abused or neglected, or have witnessed domestic violence or a violent crime. ChildSafe provides services in a safe, child-friendly environment where law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, and medical and mental health professionals can share information and coordinate strategies sensitive to the needs of each child.
Who needs their services?
All children have the inalienable right to feel protected and loved. They come into this world trusting unconditionally, and it is our responsibility to not abuse that trust. Yet according to a 2017 report by the US Department of Health and Human Services, CPS agencies received an estimated. 4.1 million referrals involving alleged maltreatment of approximately 7.5 million children. It is estimated that at least 5 children die every day from maltreatment, many at the hands of those they trust.
Disturbingly, San Antonio continues to have the highest per capita rate of child abuse cases of all major, metropolitan Texas cities. In 2018, Bexar County had 5,865 confirmed cases of c
hild abuse, illustrating an increase of 5% from 2017 – nine of those children died. Although child abuse is a major public health crisis, it is commonly underreported—one in five U.S. children are sexually abused before their 18th birthday, but only one in ten will ever tell anyone. According to these statistics, there are thousands of Bexar County children silently suffering abuse every day.

ChildSafe Cardboard Kids – Drawing Attention To The Issue Of Child Abuse
ChildSafe created Cardboard Kids, a city-wide public awareness campaign to draw attention to the pervasiveness of child abuse and the fact that every story and every child is unique. They represent the thousands of children that are abused & neglected at the hands of adults in our community each year. They start the conversation, not only by creating a visual symbol for children to identify with, but also by providing valuable tips for caregivers on how to talk to their children about child abuse and neglect.
How to Participate:
Step 1: Pick up your cardboard kid. Visit any distribution sites during March 6-7 or March 13-14. (EIA has some, too!)
Step 2: Dress up and decorate your cardboard kid however you like!
Step 3: Place your cardboard kid in a highly visible place on Reveal Day, April 2nd, and watch for others!
Step 4: Be social. If you discover a cardboard kid, snap a picture! #CardboardKidsSA
